Database Engine

SQL Server / MSDE Database
Locum uses a SQL Server database for clinical data and medicine information (MIMS). A SQL Server / MSDE installation needs to be accessible for Locum to run. A cut-down version of SQL Server is provided on the CD which is known as Microsoft SQL Server Desktop Edition (MSDE) and is recommended for sites with 5 users or less.
For sites larger than 5 users, it is recommended to purchase SQL Server 2000 from Microsoft, as this will provide the best performance.
Minimum Requirement:  MSDE 2000 (provided with Install CD)

Additional Notes

Q. Do you need a server to run Locum?
A. While it is not recommended, if you have more than once computer, you can run your practice as stand-alone computers (no server), but this will mean that doctors will not be able to share any data between them (i.e. they can only view data on their computer). This essentially means that if patients switch between doctors, patient information will need to be re-entered on the other doctor's computer.

An alternative option could be to setup one of the computers as a server. Note, this would still require purchasing some hardware to set up a network between them and then configuring the network (assuming one doesn't currently exist), but it would be cheaper than buying a dedicated server.
